Making India Clean

Its been a while since I updated my blog. Not that I did not come across a topic or an idea, there were many, but its about the right time.

Since the last post, there have been so much going around in the country. A idea to change the politics, Aam Aadmi Party formed the government in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal resigned after 49 days of his coalition government, and how the party is eying for the Loksabha Elections.

Yeah, cleaning is not just the physical one, but our society too needs to be cleaned and make it rejuvenate.

But, it seems that the common Indian did not care about the society until his sleeping face got a hard punch and they woke realize that we need to do something about it. We need a similar punch once more to make aware about the filth that we all are creating each day.

Last semester I we had an open elective here at IIT Guwahati. It was "Solid Waste Management", and it turned out to be a delightful change from the regular branch courses. The course taught us the generation of Municipal waste, its management and handing techniques.

And when we came to know about the magnitude of waste generated, it was shocking.
Close to 0.1 million tonnes of waste generation/day,  with ~70% of waste is collected by Municipal corporation .. which means we still have about 30% of waste still inside the city and which increases each day.

There are then private firms who has been hired to collect the waste from the area, and charge anywhere between Rs 500-1500 truck /trip. So there is lot of money that is put in here.

Government Outlook
Only since a decay or two, there has been some steps taken by the government implement solutions of waste disposal, designing the landfill and to promote segregation and improvise & increase the rate of collection.

The major problem which our country faces in terms of solid waste is that Ministry things that implementing the ideas which are working efficienty in foreign nations will solve the purpose.

NO

The type of waste that is generated here is different. We, here, have more of wet waste, which is apparent from our eating habits. Our food contains - Dal, Chapati, Vegetables, Rice etc ... which is wet in nature. In contrast to the West and other developed nations, who has more of processed and canned food.

Hence, the nature of the waste generated is different and needs separate types of processing.

The Mindset
We need to change our attitude towards the waste. Why call it Waste in the first place. Let's just call it Property. Now, we all should take some responsibility for our property, which we all do in general.

There should be a sense of belonging which would create an urge to take a step ahead and lead to actions which would hence generate a though and an idea in the brain to first Segregate the waste and then to see to it that they are properly taken by the Municipal Authorities.

What is Needed ?
  • Segregation - Keep separate dustbins for different types of waste viz Wet, Dry, Glass & E-Waste. This looks simple, but IF this starts happening in each home in India, the country would actually become drastically clean. Like Literally !!!
  • Improve efficiency of Collection of Waste - Better designed collection vehicle, proper attire & safety harnesses for collection people.
  • Promote community level generation of Bio-gas and Vermi compost which would not only reduce consumption of LPGs, but produce the best quality of compost (a natural fertilizer) whic could be sold to farmers which would help in growth in cultivation.
  • Awareness - There are simple techniques which are practical, there is just a need to change in our attitude and education people about the same.

I would now take out a moment and thank Aamir Khan & Satyamev Jayate Team which are helping in bringing about the awareness about different problems in the country and also suggest suitable measures to tackle the same.

Satyamev Jayate is now running its Season 2. The last episode was on Managing Waste "Don't Waste Your Garbage", if you haven't watched it yet, do it now.

Another Thought
I was going through a Youtube Video, where I came across a board which read "Designated Smoking Area". This was a surprise.

In India, its illegal to smoke in a pubic place, the only smoking area are present on the Airports.

But the habit here is a little different. We have more people consuming Khaini and Paan  than smokers. And the dirt they create are commendable. I am sure you are reminded of the corners of your own building staircase, railway station, bus stops... they are everywhere.

Will creating a designated " Spitting Area" for all those help ? Got a better solution. Leave your comments below.
