This is my list that I had made prior to joining IIT-Guwahati in 2010 and then I had thought this should go up on my blog and its online since 2012. This list can be modified  according to one’s own needs. This list can also be used by anybody who will be staying in a hostel. This might be helpful to all joining various engineering/Medicine or any college for that matter and will be spending a couple of years in the hostel…far away from home.

The list is as follows:

1.      Clothing

·        Shirt – Full & Half

·        T-Shirts

·        Jeans - 3

·        Shorts - 3

·        1 Kruta & Pyjama / Ethnic Wear

·        Undergarments – a couple of pairs to the last longer

·        Formal Trouser - 1 at least

·        Handkerchief – 4

·        Napkin – 2

·        Cotton towel – 1

·        Socks – 3 Pairs

·        Bedsheet – 2 with pillow cover

·        Bedding – 1 (Mattress) buy Locally

·        Tracksuit – 1 (optional) – this would come handy during PT/Sports during winters

·        Blanket (This shall be according to geographical location of your college. Take a thick one if the place becomes colder during winters)

·        Pillow (1 /2/3 according to your comfort, I’d suggest buying it locally)

·        Formals: Will be useful at Interviews for Internship (3^rd year) and Placements (4^th year) and also some events that you plan to attend. Suit with/without matching trouser, shirt, tie, shoes, socks, belt and knee-length skirt for girls [NOTE: This is not immediate requirement, you could plan it out after 2^nd year]

2.      Food Items:

·          Namkeem

·          Dabar Chaywanprash – Saves me from cold/cough

·          Laddu – This is indeed a thing to look for when even canteen is closed and you plan to have a night out before exams/other occasions.

·          Some Biscuits

·          Noodles/ Pasta / Soups – only if you plan to cook these at your hostel room
[NOTE: Cooking could be strictly prohibited at your hostel, so be careful & do go through the Hostel Rules Carefully]

·          Add other directly consumable articles
[Add fruits & yeah don’t forget to drink 3-4 L of water each day J]

3.      Documents (Original & Attested Photocopy)

·          College Exam/JEE Original Admit Card

·          Acceptance Letter

·          Offer Letter

·          Class XII Mark sheet

·          Class XII Passing Certificate

·          Domicile Certificate
·          Category Certificate (if applicable)

·          Plenty of Passports sized photographs [You would need this for Temporary ID & SIM Card]

·          (Add Others which are specified)

4.      Accessories & Sports

·          Nail-Cutter

·          Belt

·          Cap

·          Raincoat & Umbrella [Don’t ever lend it to your seniors; only do so after you know them].

·          Specks / Pair of Glasses (If you have them). Advisable to have extra pair

·          Wrist Watch

·          T.T Racket

·          Squash Racket

·          Badminton

·          Tennis Racket

·          Backpack for traveling home [Size should be enough to carry clothes for a few day’s stay]

·          A big luggage bag (with rollers preferred) – to pack things and head home after semester gets over

·          Detergent, Soaps & Case to keep them

·          Deodorant / Perfume

·          Cloth Hanger

·          Sunglasses & Cap

2.      Footwear

·          Sports Shoes – Running

·          Sleepers (Leather)

·          Sleepers (Bathroom)

·          Sandals

·          Liquid Polish

·          Formal Black Shoes

5.      Stationary

·          Notebooks

·          Old JEE notes – a few, but generally I didn’t feel they were required. This was just to brush up the 11/12 topics which correlated to the topics in 1st year

·          Pencil Box

·          Stapler

·          Paper Pins

·          Scissor

·          Pen Stand

·          Metallic Scale

·          Highlighter

·          Tape

·          Fevicol & fevistick

·          Lock & Key (2 Pairs)

·          Bag – of course !

·          Some Rough Books

·          Scientific Calculator – Casio 991 ES – Compare online/offline prices before purchasing

·          Engineering Drawing Tools – Drafter, Ruler, Geometry Box etc … ask from seniors or Professor will tell you what all to buy

NOTE: The textbooks for each course in each semester shall be told to you by the Prof taking the course. They could be found in the (in the order) Library / Ask seniors for the same / Book shop in the campus / Purchase Old ones from Shop in the city / Buy new ones (while you plan to buy a new one, do compare their price online and choose the best option available)

6.      Electronics

·          Mobile Phone with Charger

·          Scientific Calculator [CASIO fx-991ES ]

·          Screw Driver with Tester

·          Torch / Mobile Phone with Torch Light should suffice

·          Table Lamp

·          Camera [Only if you want to take pictures of our beautiful campus]

·          Pen Drive [A Must – 4/8/1GB good enough]

·          Laptop [preferred in 2^nd semester/ 3^rd the semester will be the best option]

[Note: First-year is really important in Engineering as it forms a base and getting good grades should be at your #2 priority. Priority #1 = Health, if you are healthy only then you’ll be able to put your energy into studies J  ]

·        External Hard  Disk [Optional]

·        Clothing Iron [Optional]

·        Earphones [Optional]

7.      Bathroom
      ·          A Bucket or Two + Mug

·          Tooth Brush

·          Toothpaste

·          Tongue Cleaner

·           A Carrying Case for above

·          Soap Case

·          Mouthwash

·          Face Wash

·          Ezee washing liquid to wash woolens

·          Beard Trimmer [if needed]

·          Shaving Kit [if needed]

 8.      Medicine Box Containing
      ·          Mosquito Coil / Repellent Cream

·          Cotton

·          Dabur Pudhin Hara (for stomach ache, gas & indigestion)

·          Dentogel – for mouth ulcer

·          ORS

·          Paracetamol

·          Amoxicillin

·          Relispray – Muscular

·          Relispray – Antiseptic

·          Dettol Liq. Antiseptic

·          Crape Bandage

·          Soframicin – Antibacterial Cream

·          Tiger Balm for Cold / Vicks Vapour up

·          Iodex Gel ( for Muscular pain )

Additional Items for Girls (some from this list can also be used by Boys)

·        Nail Paints (if you use)

·        Nail paint remover, if above is true

·        Hair Oil

·        Shampoo

·        Conditioner

·        Comb – both thick and thin

·        A lot of rubber bands and clutches

·        Moisturizer
